Built
in 1998, the Bruton Counseling Center
greatly enhances the counseling program
of the Children's Home. This modern,
state of the art, facility strengthens
the ability of our counselors to meet
and address the many psychological and
emotional wounds our young people of
experienced.
The Bruton Counseling Center also
expands our capacity to counsel with the
families of our residents. The Center
contains rooms for family, group and
individual counseling, and a play
therapy room and conference rooms.
ROLAND MEMORIAL CHAPEL
Built in 1978, the Roland Memorial
Chapel serves as the spiritual center of
our campus. Each Sunday morning the
campus gathers for worship in our
chapel. With the help of our chaplain,
the children act as ushers, acolytes,
song leaders, greeters, worship leaders
and help to provide music for the
service. Every Wednesday evening a
vesper service is held in the chapel.
This is a more informal time of
fellowship. The children might sing, see
a video, discuss issues or enjoy a
variety of different programs. The
chapel is also home to our music
program. Our residents enjoy a wide
range of musical opportunities. Choirs
for all age groups, individual music
lessons and more offer the chance for
our boys and girls to learn music,
express themselves and gain a new
self-confidence by performing for
others.
HARDIN HALL
Hardin Halls serves as our campus
welcome center and is home to all the
administrative and development offices,
conference rooms, archives room, alumni
office, volunteer workroom, campus post
office and many other functions. Hardin
Hall was built in 1926 and originally
housed the main body of what was then
the Florida Methodist Orphanage.
THERAPEUTIC ROPES COURSE
Our Therapeutic Ropes Course begins with
relationship building and moves to a
challenging set of obstacles created to
help our middle and high school
residents develop self-esteem and gain
new confidence. Residents also learn to
trust themselves, their cottage mates
and adults. At each station along the
Ropes Course, the young people are faced
with an element to overcome. In order to
succeed the young people must rely on
their peers, trust others for their
safety, function as a team to solve
problems and find the courage to do
something very difficult. It is our hope
that by facing their fears and working
hard to overcome the Ropes Course, our
young people will begin to develop the
strength and courage within to face the
fears and obstacles life itself places
in their way.
LAURA P. TAYLOR GYMNATORUIM
The Laura P. Taylor Gymnatorium is the
focal point of our recreation program.
Our young people enjoy a wide variety of
recreation opportunities. Age level
appropriate activities are designed for
afternoon and evening recreation
periods. Our Gymnatorium also offers
activities that include a pottery class,
craft class, clowning class, aerobics
and much more. A large stage also
affords the opportunity to host
performances and special events. We have
a workout room for residents and staff.
WORRELL MEMORIAL EDUCATION CENTER
Each resident of the Children's Home
attends public school. However, due to
the difficult circumstances they have
faced many of our young people have
fallen behind their peers in school and
need special attention. Our education
coordinator evaluates all new residents,
registers each one for school and
designs an education program that will
aid each resident in achieving academic
success. After school, certified
schoolteachers come to the Home and
tutor our children in different subject
areas.
The Worrell Memorial Education Center
is complete with tutoring rooms,
computers, a well-supplied library,
resource materials and much more.
WALLER-JETER COTTAGE
Waller-Jeter Cottage is one of eleven
cottages on our campus serving the young
people at the Children's Home. The
therapeutic capacity of a cottage is 8
residents, but can serve up to 10
children if the need arises. Like all
our cottages, Waller-Jeter Cottage seeks
to provide a warm, home-like atmosphere
for our young people to enjoy. Children
are responsible for keeping their rooms
clean, doing various chores, completing
homework assignments and managing day to
day life in the cottage. Meals are
prepared in the cottage and enjoyed
family style. Houseparents are on duty
at all times to give adult supervision
and guidance.
